About Me

If you asked me two years to start a blog, I would have stared blankly, not knowing where to start or what to write.  Today, the words can't help but flow from my mind to my fingers, my heart to my keyboard.  I have no choice.  It's a healing outlet, a place to process pain, share hope and choose joy.

I've avoided writing this "about me" section.  Maybe because I think it's hard to sum a person up in a few paragraphs.  Or maybe it's because I didn't know whether to talk about who I was, who I am or who I am becoming.  But, since you're here - and I'm so glad you are - let me introduce myself.

My name is Kim and this is my blog - Thrive Out Loud.

When I graduated from high school, I had dreams of becoming a cinematographer and journalist, producing documentaries for National Geographic.  Funny how life takes its own twists and turns. I ended up becoming an elementary school teacher, a nonprofit attorney and an operations manager for a restaurant chain. Yes, I can teach your kid plate tectonics, review your contracts, and roll a mean burrito in under 20 seconds.   From the classroom to the courtroom, I am an advocate - for children, for women, for families, for change, for justice.

I am a mommy to two little girls, wife to a wicked smart, hunky husband, oldest of three sisters, and believer in God's grace.

On February 14, 2011, my life changed.  A sweet Valentine's Day with my daughters was interrupted by a phone call from my doctor.  MRI results showed lesions on my spine which led to a whirlwind of tests, procedures and questions.  You can read the whole story here.   After dozens of tests, months of pain and days of wondering, I was finally diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis - a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the spine.  Doctors say there is no cure, but I believe that daily I am being healed.

Fear, pain and sickness have shown me that there is strength in weakness.  We are more resilient than we realize, more faithful than we believe.  Pain gave me new purpose and purpose makes us unstoppable.  I am a wellness warrior - eating and drinking clean and green. I think health is more than just the absence of disease; it is wholeness:  mind, body and spirit. And that is why I write - I am living, loving, thriving - and doing it out loud.

Thank you for reading. I love that you're here.  I hope that you leave encouraged, hopeful and ready to live like you mean it.

Love and Peace,
Kim
